‘The Singing Bin’ in Cambridge supports Hospice Care

For 25 years, Charles Cavey, known as ‘The Singing Bin Man’, has been a regular and memorable presence on King’s Parade in Cambridge. Both tourists and locals delight in his unique performances, which have become a talking point in the city.

Charles’s connection with Arthur Rank Hospice Charity runs deep. His Nana was cared for by the Hospice when it was on Mill Road, and the experience left a lasting impact on him. As a ten-year-old, he visited her during her last days and he has always been grateful for the compassionate care she received. Over the years, Charles has also had a friend and an ex-partner cared for by the Hospice. These personal experiences motivate him to fundraise for the Charity.

The idea for ‘busking in a bin’ came about somewhat serendipitously. Charles and a friend were simply messing around when they stumbled upon the concept. What started as a bit of fun quickly turned into a beloved Cambridge tradition. Initially, Charles busked close to someone who was collecting for Charity, and he donated a portion of his earnings each day. However, when he moved to a new location, he took it upon himself to start collecting donations directly for Arthur Rank Hospice Charity.

Now primarily based at King’s Parade, Charles’s performances are not only entertaining but also successful in raising funds. Tourists and locals alike, are drawn to his cheerful presence and unique act. With his ‘Snap, Share and Sing Along’ poster, Charles ensures that everyone who donates knows their contribution makes a difference. Charles commented:

“It is such important work done by the Hospice team, I am delighted to have the platform available to help others find out more.”
